The Challenge
Turning a passion for anime and manga into a viable retail business was our brief for THE ANIME OTAKU.
Inspired by a genuine love of anime culture, the ambition was to create more than just an anime store selling collectibles, clothing, books and merchandise. It was about creating a destination for anime and manga enthusiasts; a place where people could discover new products, connect with like-minded fans and be part of a growing community.
As a brand-new start-up, our challenge was to create a distinctive retail experience while balancing creative ambition with the realities of a start-up budget.
What we did
Creating a new retail business from scratch required far more than just creative store design.
Working closely with the client, we became a partner in the process, helping shape the business from its earliest stages. We advised on the suitability of potential units within Westfield, helping secure the right location and navigate the requirements of opening within a major shopping centre environment.
From there, we developed THE ANIME OTAKU brand, designed the store concept and produced the detailed design package. We also managed the tender process, helping appoint the right fit-out contractor before overseeing delivery through to completion.
The design itself takes inspiration from anime culture and Japanese pop culture. Bold graphics, custom wall treatments and strategic use of colour create a distinctive environment that feels authentic to its audience. Throughout the project, we worked closely with the client to balance creative ambition with commercial reality, ensuring investment was focused on the areas that would deliver the greatest impact.
